Utopia is back！

Utopian Group  is composed by Deng Da-Fei and He Hai and has gained rising influence in Chinese contemporary art in recent years, based on the residency project which is an important method to them. In the summer of 2009, invited by Deveron Art, they travelled to Huntly in Scotland, the hometown of sinologist James Legge, for the residency project James Legge: Palace of puzzle. This exhibition is a retrospection of their project.

The title of the exhibition Utopia is back has several meanings:  1.The retrospection in Beijing of the project of Utopian Group  in Huntly.  2. Utopia as a conception from the West turns back to the West.  3. Utopia, a forgotten concept in contemporary society, now receives new attention and interest through its re-interpretation by Utopian Group.

While James Legge came to China, Deng Da-Fei and He Hai travelled to the UK, thus in some sense finishing a cultural exchange visit which started more than 100 years ago. Thanks to the cultural legacy left by James Legge's work, Utopia Group was able to creatively open a new dimension and space in the communication and exchanges between China and the UK. To sum up their work, Utopia Group believe anywhere in the world can become home.
