And on the other hand Sergej Zarva, a Ukrainian painter, installation and performance artist. He creates large scale collages, often painting directly onto magazines, photographs or objects. Zarva critically and playfully re-appropriates Socialist Realism and the kitsch debris of everyday life under Communism. His ironic works take themes such as the family, society, glamor and entertainment and present them with grotesque and fantastical realism. His paintings are vast murals that imagine the lost monumentalism of the Soviet era with a slick hyper-realism more akin to the mass media's simulacral surfaces than socialism.
