On the one hand Katja Solov`eva, the Ukrainian artist works from found photographs, Solov'eva finds many of her images in the pages of Ogonyok (Little Flame), one of Russia’s oldest weekly illustrated magazines. These Soviet images – all originally black and white – represent a long gone, staged and propagandistic version of reality as it was constructed by the State. In her appropriations, Solov'eva rejects both hollow critique and passive nostalgia, seeking instead to actively re-engage in the humanistic optimism of this lost imaginary.
