Li-Space is situated in Caochangdi Art District, Beijing, China, full name is Beijing Li-Space Culture & Art Center. It was founded by Gu Zhenqing and Yang Li in July 2008. The exhibition hall of Li-Space is 318 square meters and 5.8 meters high, composed by two main halls, two video rooms and a backyard. Since its founding, Li-Space has been working on the construction of the concept “New Blood of Art”. This concept doesn’t constrain to the outstanding endeavor of the young generation but also tries to encourage the already established artists to gain new strength. It is no doubt that the new energy of art creation lies in the efforts of making a fresh restart when changed to a new track and artists’ logo went to zero.

BLACK&RED,BEYOND COLOR: PHOTOGRAPHY OF ANGÈLE ETOUNDI ESSAMBA AN EXHIBITION OF CAOCHANGDI PHOTOSPRING 2012 – ARLES IN BEIJING
Time: 2012/4/25---2012/5/24
Venue::Li-Space,Red No.1-F,Caochangdi,Beijing
Artist(s):  Angèle Etoundi Essamba
Cameroon-born Dutch female photographer AngèleEtoundiEssamba’s unique vision of women, especially in the sensitive expression of African and black women, has come to form a new interpretation of the cultural upheaval of the African community in the context of globalization.Through the black women under her lens, the viewer gains a glimpse into the private face of contemporary Africa. The photogenic color contrasts and the dark faces in the images constitute the theme of Angèle’sart : humanity. The expression of human nature is the one common trait in all of her work. She does not focus on pioneering forms or emphasize public visual impact. She has always strived to express ultimate values through the power of affinity in her art: timelessness and freedom. Angèle’s works are not just the expression of African cultural conflict between tradition and modernism, but also the embodiment of thedefense of feminine consciousness. The exhibition goesbeyond cultural collision to evoke a sense of cultural awareness and self-awareness.This is the reason that I have chosen to present the first retrospective of the works of this African artist in a public exhibition at Li Space in Beijing. The exhibition creates a unique opportunity to explore and share Angèle’s artwith Chinese audiences.

The Réunion Island Biennale had a ground-breaking, tip-of-the-iceberg feel to it. It differed from the mainstream international biennial model in terms of its exhibition mechanisms, selection of artists and artwork selection methods. Winnowing down from the massive list of jury recommendations and artist applications, the international jury committee selected 27 cutting-edge artists under 35 hailing from all of the world’s continents.

The original meaning of incubator was a device for the artificial incubation of animal eggs. Beijing Li Space defines itself as an incubator space aimed at providing exhibition space and shared resources such as curation, promotion, information and academic exchange for artists facing the difficulties of their early creative careers. An incubator can be an impenetrable protective cover for creativity, or it can be a platform that gathers various artistic forces to clash and create new potential. The self-practice, self-expression and self-values affirmation of contemporary art present a spiritual cross section of a given period in time. The ideal of the incubator is to incubate its subject so that it can soon go out and create on its own in the social reality of the wider world.
